The Real Dream Cabaret returns to Squeaky Wheel this July for four performances of their latest full-length production as part of this year’s Infringement Festival. In “The Picture,” the improvisational collective combines a loose, abstract adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s 1890 horror novel The Picture of Dorian Gray with additional contemporary material for a study of sin, beauty, image-making, and decadence. The result is a work with one foot in the late nineteenth century and one foot in the early twenty-first century, where bad Shakespeare, Dark Shadows, 80s club kids, and Dick Cheney all share the stage. The production is conceived and performed by Theresa Baker, John Carocci, Ron Ehmke, Jeannine Giffear, Kitty Jung, and Brian Milbrand.
The Real Dream Cabaret is a Buffalo-based performance group founded in 2003 whose work provides audiences with a skeptical, sometimes absurdist, always participatory approach to media, culture, gender issues, politics, and art. Their ever-changing live shows feature music, outrageous costumes, video, visual art, dance, puppets, lip-synch, and other forms of entertainment to explore darker themes. Past works have included (extremely loose) adaptations of the epic of Gilgamesh, Macbeth, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and the WB tv series Seventh Heaven. They are breaking with tradition this time by actually reading the book they are adapting.
