orlandeau (a self-contained pas de deux)
Virginia Woolf's "Orlando" follows a passionate young man through three centuries and one gender transformation, exploring gender and sexuality with historical and literary figures. Lillian Altreuter is adapting Woolf's literary love letter to Vita Sackville-West into a full-length story ballet. The excerpt shown at Infringement 2019 is a duet for one, an exploration of Orlando's gender metamorphosis set to Shakespeare's Sonnet No. 20. In this work, masculine and feminine archetypes are systematically deconstructed and redesigned as the dancer transforms from within.
