Our production of Bertolt Brecht's one-act masterpiece
THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE is performed entirely outdoors
moving -- scene by scene -- through the streets, sidewalks, parks and
parking lots of Allentown. With each performance, our off-the-
wall caravan of actors, musicians, and banner-carriers wends its
way through the very heart of the infringement festival inviting
spectators to follow in its wake!
THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE is a powerful one-act play
that offers a timeless denounciation of exploitation.
Following the journey of one profit-obsessed "Merchant" and
one horribly over-worked "Coolie," this roughly hour-long tale
remains as important today as the day it was written in 1937.
In keeping with the experimental style of this project, our
production incorporates a broad arsenal of performance art
techniques including pantomime, mask work, and even a bohemian
traveling band that provides both instrumentals and live foley
effects to each scene!
Mime and movement virtuoso Leonard Ziolkowski heads up a cast
that also features Travis Taber, Hasheen DeBerry*, Patricia
Armstrong*, Anthony Tyrpak, Monica Karwan*, Marshall Maxwell*,
Briana Jernigan*, and Kevin Cain. Movement Choreography is
by Monica Karwan*, Costume Design is by Patricia Armstong*,
Graphic Design is by Matt Clabeaux. Live music is provided by
Patrick Cain and a long list of guest musicians.
Bringing together the radical words of Bertolt Brecht with the
intensity of a mass street demonstration and the energy of an
anything-goes street party, our rendition of THE EXCEPTION AND
THE RULE is a completely unique theatrical experience that you
don't want to miss!
