Temporary DreamPresented by Temporary Dream and Nimbus Dance
The program begins with a 20-minute video entitled Where the Cicadas Sing, edited by David Gracon, including historic 8mm footage shot by David Tatsuno of WWII internment camps for Japanese-Americans. This melancholy and ironically humorous meditation on the loss of civil rights is a timely reminder to safeguard our freedoms from the war hawks of today. The Eno-esque sounds of Temporary Dream (band members are David Gracon, Greg Genco, and Jeff Fose) accompany the video. Brian Milbrand uses the triple-screen video theater at Gallery 164 for three 7-minute works created specifically for three channel projection: The Patriot, Cat’s Meow, and The Film Robert Longo Should’ve Made. The Patriot explores the differences between patriotism and nationalism by re-cutting Hollywood’s Revolutionary War era Mel Gibson epic and reconstructing the plodding narrative to create lively visuals and double-edge themes. Nimbus Dance will literally turn the stage upside-down with hip-hop tinged, Pilates-inspired hanging feats during two untitled 16mm film projections by Brian Milbrand. In the first piece, performers Beth Elkins, Theresa Baker, and Aaron Piepszny tell us their dreams and become kinetic human projection screens for dynamic super-imposed double-screen abstractions. The cabaret-like setting was designed by architect Brad Wales with assistance from Jon Spielman and Rich Maklary. The show closes with a 16mm double-wide film in which Milbrand is accompanied by Vince Mistretta in creating a colorful, live, hand-drawn, magic marker projection onto the Nimbus performers. This work continues Nimbus’ collaborative choreographic approach, developed in the April 2006 performance of Story of a Girl which also featured Baker, Elkins, and a cameo appearance by Milbrand. Temporary Dream (the band) will accompany all pieces throughout the program. Temporary Dream (the band): David Gracon, Greg Genco, and Jeff Fose
