FRED'S REQUIEM

WRITTEN BY MATTHEW LACHIUSA

Fred Valardo is dead. In his death he has left behind an estranged wife, “The Queen of the Desert”, his disgruntled grape-growing son and two grandchildren, one who has inherited her grandmother’s perchance to uproot at any given moment and the other who has inherited his grandfather’s deep growing roots.

Along the way of this one-act, eight vignette, play, other characters find some sense of redemption through the death of Fred. A father and his daughter understand that a journey can only be worth-while if the earth is round, two old buddies of Fred discuss their times with “Basement Mary” and ultimately realize the truth behind Fred and her, a Catholic Priest, Father Harry, vainly attempts to summarize the simple life of Fred Valardo, and a valet guy at the airport understand what it means to “be the bug and to be the windshield.”

FRED’S REQUIEM is about the guilt-removing force behind redemption. Each character in the play seeks a piece of this and is driven by it.
